The Ocean Access Project (OAP), founded in 2023, is dedicated to exposing children in inland regions of Africa to the ocean, sparking curiosity and fascination with its dynamic systems, functions, creatures, and ecosystems. The project started and continues to operate with 6 primary schools in the Kibera Slum, Nairobi, where most students will never have the opportunity to experience the ocean firsthand. After accepting a summer intern position in Nairobi, I founded the project as an extension to a school based STEM exposure club in Connecticut.
Through OAP, individually or collectively funded boxes filled with ocean-themed educational and artistic materials are donated to a group of primary schools. The boxes also include comics and activities focused on marine and tidal energy, generously gifted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). OAP boxes are not available for commercial or personal use; they are intended solely for donation. While suggestions for recipients are welcome, final selections are made by me to ensure the boxes reach students who will benefit most.
